AIS mismatch guide: fix it before you file

A mismatch between your AIS and your return is the most common reason salaried taxpayers get a notice. Here is how to find, understand and resolve mismatches before you submit.

Common causes of an AIS mismatch

  • Duplicate reporting — the same FD or transaction reported by two branches or platforms
  • Wrong PAN — someone else's transaction tagged to you (or yours to them)
  • Gross vs net — income shown before charges that you booked net
  • Timing — interest accrued in one year, reported in another
  • Genuinely omitted income — interest or dividends you forgot to include

How to resolve a mismatch, step by step

  1. 1Download your AIS and TIS from the Compliance / AIS area of incometax.gov.in.
  2. 2Compare each entry against your bank, broker and Form 16 records.
  3. 3For anything wrong, use the feedback option and choose the right reason — duplicate, other PAN, not taxable, or incorrect amount.
  4. 4Keep documentary proof for every entry you dispute or adjust.
  5. 5File your return on your actual, correct income — including anything the AIS legitimately surfaced.

Feedback does not change your tax by itself

Raising feedback documents your position; it does not automatically reduce your income. You still file on your real numbers. The feedback is what you point to if the department later asks why your figure differs from the AIS.

A faster reconciliation

DrishtiTax helps you line up your Form 16, AIS and deductions so the gaps are obvious and you can file a complete, consistent return — then go raise feedback on anything the AIS got wrong.
