AIS vs Form 16: what's the difference?
Both are inputs to your return, but they cover different ground. Knowing what each one is for is the simplest way to file a complete, mismatch-free ITR.
The short version
Form 16 is a certificate from your employer: the salary it paid and the tax it deducted. The AIS is the income-tax department's consolidated view of everything reported about you — salary, bank interest, dividends, mutual-fund and share sales, and high-value transactions. One is narrow and employer-issued; the other is broad and department-issued.
Side by side
| Form 16 | AIS |
|---|---|
| Issued by your employer | Generated by the income-tax department |
| Covers salary income and TDS only | Covers salary, interest, dividends, securities, SFT |
| Part A (TDS) + Part B (salary breakup) | Category-wise, with a TIS summary |
| Your starting point for salary | Your cross-check for everything else |
Why they disagree — and that is normal
Form 16 will not show your FD interest, your dividends, or the shares you sold — your employer never saw them. The AIS will. Equally, the AIS can over-report: the same deposit counted twice, or a transaction tagged to the wrong PAN. A difference is a prompt to reconcile, not proof of an error on your part.
The salaried trap
