AIS review: reconcile what the department already sees

Your Annual Information Statement lists the income the tax department has on record. Reviewing it before you file is the cleanest way to avoid mismatches, notices and missed income — and to file with confidence.

Why an AIS review matters

The income-tax department pre-populates a lot of your return from the AIS. When your filed figures and your AIS disagree, the system flags it. Most notices salaried taxpayers receive are not about fraud — they are about an interest income, a dividend, or a sale of shares that was simply left out because the taxpayer never looked at their AIS. A ten-minute review removes that risk.

A mismatch is not the same as a mistake

AIS data can itself be wrong or double-counted (the same FD reported by two branches, a transaction attributed to the wrong PAN). The point of a review is to decide, item by item, what is genuinely your income — and to document the rest.

What to reconcile in your AIS

  • Salary — should match Form 16 Part B gross salary
  • Interest — savings accounts, fixed deposits, recurring deposits, bonds
  • Dividend income — often missed entirely by salaried filers
  • Sale of securities and mutual funds — capital gains the department already sees
  • TDS and TCS credits — make sure every credit you are owed is reflected
  • SFT / high-value transactions — large deposits, card spends, property

How to review your AIS, step by step

  1. 1Download your AIS and TIS from the Compliance / AIS section of incometax.gov.in.
  2. 2Compare salary and TDS against your Form 16.
  3. 3Tick off interest and dividend entries against your bank and broker statements.
  4. 4Flag anything that is duplicated, belongs to someone else, or is simply wrong — and raise feedback.
  5. 5Make sure every income in the AIS is reflected (correctly) in your ITR before you submit.
